How Design Live: Portland 2014
Created for "How Design Live: Portland 2014", as a student project. The objective was to create a custom typeface that captured a city in America, and create a poster to attract visitors and conference goers.
Being a fan of Portlandia, and also hoping to one day visit Portland, the choice was obvious.
The Typeface
I wanted to create a semi-slab serif typeface in order to capture that rustic feel of Portland, all the while adding its own unique, unstructured flair.
I paired my own typeface, named PDX with Tyler Finck's Ostrich Sans at League of Moveable Type.
The Poster
Portland is known for it's quiet, quirky and mysterious quality that I wanted to encapsulate in one poster in order to attract those interested in visiting the city. Portland is also known for being the "City of Roses" as well as it's unofficial slogan, "Keep Portland Weird," which helps encourage the citizens of Portland to utilize their small businesses. The stag in the background is a homage to the White Stag sign that is currently located in the city. I combined all of these elements that I researched, with the city's skyline at dusk, to create a mysterious atmosphere that teases and interests it's audience.
